Sunscreen ingredient may increase skin cancer risk

ScienceDaily (May 7, 2012) ? As vacationers prepare to spend time outdoors this summer, many of them will pack plenty of sunscreen in hopes it will protect their bodies from overexposure, and possibly from skin cancer. But researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology are discovering that sunscreen may not be so safe after all.

Cell toxicity studies by Dr. Yinfa Ma, Curators' Teaching Professor of chemistry at Missouri S&T, and his graduate student Qingbo Yang, suggest that when exposed to sunlight, zinc oxide, a common ingredient in sunscreens, undergoes a chemical reaction that may release unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals seek to bond with other molecules, but in the process, they can damage cells or the DNA contained within those cells. This in turn could increase the risk of skin cancer.

Ma also found that the longer zinc oxide is exposed to sunlight, the greater the potential damage to human cells.

"Zinc oxide may generate free radicals when exposed to UV (ultraviolet) sunlight," May says, "and those free radicals can kill cells."

Ma studied how human lung cells immersed in a solution containing nano-particles of zinc oxide react when exposed to different types of light over numerous time frames. Using a control group of cells that were not immersed in the zinc oxide solution, Ma compared the results of light exposure on the various groups of cells. He found that zinc oxide-exposed cells deteriorated more rapidly than those not immersed in the chemical compound.

Even when exposed to visible light only, the lung cells suspended in zinc oxide deteriorated. But for cells exposed to ultraviolet rays, Ma found that "cell viability decreases dramatically."

When exposed to ultraviolet long-wave light (ultraviolet A or UVA) for 3 hours, half of the lung cells in the zinc oxide solution died. After 12 hours, 90 percent of the cells in that solution died, Ma found.

Why does zinc oxide, an ingredient used in sunscreen to help block harmful UV rays, cause cells to deteriorate when exposed to sunlight? According to Ma, when the zinc oxide nano-particles in the solution absorb the UV rays, the reaction releases electrons, which in turn may produce unstable free radical molecules in the zinc oxide solution. Those free radical molecules then bond with other molecules and act as parasites, damaging the other molecules in the process.

Ma and his colleagues at Missouri S&T published their initial research results in the January 2009 edition of the Journal of Nanoparticle Research. The paper, titled "Toxicity of nano- and micro-sized ZnO particles in human lung epithelial cells," was the first comprehensive study ever published on this subject. Lead author Weisheng Lin was Ma's Ph.D. student at the time. Other authors of the paper were Chuan-Chin Huang, a graduate student in biological sciences at the time, and two members of S&T's biological sciences faculty, Dr. Katie Shannon (assistant professor) and Dr. Yue-Wern Huang (associate professor).

Now, Ma is preparing to publish his latest research results in the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology. A publication date has not been determined.

Ma's research on zinc oxide's effect on cells is still in the early stages, so he cautions people from drawing conclusions about the safety or dangers of sunscreen based on this preliminary research.

"More extensive study is still needed," May says. "This is just the first step."

For instance, Ma plans to conduct electron spin resonance tests to see whether zinc oxide truly does generate free radicals, as he suspects. In addition, clinical trials will be needed before any conclusive evidence may be drawn from his studies.

In the meantime, Ma advises sunbathers to use sunscreen and to limit their exposure to the sun.

"I still would advise people to wear sunscreen," he says. "Sunscreen is better than no protection at all."

Besides sunscreen, zinc oxide is used in many commercial products, including plastics, paints, ointments and sealants.

Putin pledges unity while police round up protesters

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin took the oath as Russia's president on Monday with a ringing appeal for unity at the start of a six-year term in which he faces growing dissent, economic problems and bitter political rivalries.

Parliament is expected to approve to his ally Dmitry Medvedev, 46, as prime minister on Tuesday, completing a job swap that has left many Russians feeling disenfranchised two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Outside the Kremlin's high red walls, riot police prevented protests by rounding up about 300 people, including men and women in cafes who were wearing the white ribbons symbolizing opposition to Putin, a day after detaining more than 400 during clashes.

But in the Kremlin, 2,000 dignitaries applauded Putin's every step down the red carpet into a vast hall with gilded columns, the throne room of tsars, where he was sworn in with his right hand resting on the red-bound Russian constitution.

"We will achieve our goals if we are a single, united people, if we hold our fatherland dear, strengthen Russian democracy, constitutional rights and freedoms," Putin said in a five-minute speech after taking the oath for the third time.

"I will do all I can to justify the faith of millions of our citizens. I consider it to be the meaning of my whole life and my obligation to serve my fatherland and our people."

The Kremlin's bells pealed, and the national anthem blared at the end of a ceremony which was followed by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church blessing Putin and the president taking charge of the nuclear suitcase.

Although he has remained Russia's dominant leader for the past four years as prime minister, Putin, 59, has now taken back the formal reins of power he ceded to Medvedev in 2008 after eight years as president.

AUTHORITY WEAKENED

Putin is returning with his authority weakened by months of protests that have polarized Russia and left the former KGB spy facing a battle to reassert himself or risk being sidelined by the business and political elites whose backing is vital.

"We want to, and we will, live in a democratic country," Putin declared, evoking patriotic images of Russia as a great nation and urging people to show a sense of responsibility and national pride to make the country stronger.

Putin made no mention of the protest movement in his speech and no promises of political reform in a series of decrees he signed after the ceremony, most of them focused on economic goals and efforts to improve living standards.

Despite his pledge, riot police, nervous after battling protesters at an anti-Putin rally on Sunday, cracked down on the slightest sign of dissent on the streets of central Moscow, many of which were almost empty.

At least 22 protesters were led away when a crowd of more than 100 started shouting "Russia without Putin" near two luxury hotels 500 m (yards) from the Kremlin.

"This shows that Putin is scared of dissatisfied citizens. Although there are not so many of us, there are not so few either," said 18-year-old student Pavel Kopilkov.

Dozens of others were detained by police on a boulevard near the route of Putin's motorcade to the ceremony, including some who had been sitting outside a French bistro wearing the white ribbon of protest on their jackets and coats.

A Reuters correspondent saw tables and chairs being overturned as the people were hauled away.

"This is shameful. This is not how you celebrate a holiday - this is how you celebrate seizing power," liberal opposition leader Boris Nemtsov said shortly before he was detained.

Police moved in quickly several times through the day as activists sought to gather in various locations for protests, pressing against crowds and detaining people.

Moscow police said 300 had been detained, but that the number included some people who were released and then detained when attempting to protest again.

In Putin's hometown of St Petersburg, police detained a few protesters in a crowd of dozens on the central Palace Square.

PUTIN UNDER PRESSURE

Although the protests, sparked by allegations of electoral fraud, had lost momentum before Sunday's rally, they have given birth to a civil society that will press on with attempts to undermine Putin's authority by contesting local elections.

Many of the protesters are angry that Putin is extending his 12-year domination of Russia and fear he will stifle political and economic reform in his third term as president.

He is under pressure to show he can adapt to the new political landscape. Few think he has changed much, if at all.

He has eased up on the choreographed macho antics that long burnished his image in Russia, such as riding horseback barechested and shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer gun.

Harder to shake off will be his habit of seeking total control, as political rivals begin to gain status and a rising middle class demands more political freedom.

He has to quell rivalries between liberals and conservatives battling for positions in the new cabinet under Medvedev, who is swapping jobs with Putin. The outcome of the struggle could help determine how far reforms go to improve the investment climate.

The $1.9 trillion economy is in better shape than that of most European countries, but is vulnerable to any drop in the price of oil, the main export commodity. The budget is under pressure from Putin's lavish pre-election spending promises.

Putin has said he wants to attract more foreign investment by improving the business climate, reduce corruption and red tape, and end Russia's heavy dependence on energy exports.

He called for the creation of a "new economy" in the speech and reiterated those goals in economic decrees signed on Monday, but critics say he has had plenty of time to tackle the persistent problems in his years in power.

He set out aims on a range of issues in other decrees, from higher wages for teachers and other state workers to better weapons for the military and a decrease in Russia's death rate.

As in the past, he is likely to use tough anti-Western rhetoric on foreign policy to drum up support if times get tough in Russia. But he never yielded his strong influence over foreign policy as premier, so a major policy shift is unlikely.

Putin struck familiar chords in a decree on foreign policy, emphasizing opposition to interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states and saying Moscow wants "strategic" ties with the United States but will not tolerate meddling.

Bird Supply Basics ? What to Look For in Your Bird Cage ? Bird ...

People who keep pets absolutely love and adore them, especially those who have feathered pets. You might feed your bird regularly, play with it, make it sing; make it speak but have you ever thought about how comfortable the bird is inside its cage? The cage to a bird is like a house to your average human. The fact that the bird is not going to be let out of the cage makes it all the more important for us to choose the right and comfortable cage for the birds.

It is important to provide them with adequate living space. Today, there are several bird cages that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, models and colors. There are innumerable and endless choices but the trick lies in choosing the best one for your particular type of feathered pet. Given below are the most important things to be kept in mind when you buy a cage for your bird.

The location and placement of the cage is very important. If you are scared that your bird might fly away or be restless when the cage is placed near the window, then an apt place should be chosen inside the house itself. This place should not be secluded and should be such that the bird has you and other folks around it and thereby enabling it to develop socially. Once the location is chosen, the shop keeper can give you the apt choice of cages for that location.

The next thing to be looked into is SIZE. Simple logic works here- large birds require big cages and their smaller counterparts require small ones. That does not mean that a small bird like canaries can be kept in cages that are barely bigger than the bird itself. There should be enough space in the cage for the bird to move around. When confined to small spaces, birds tend to get irritated and therefore they might screech, make lot of noise, peck, pluck their own feathers etc. It is important to choose the size of the cage with great care.

Next thing to be looked at is the bars of the cage. Small birds require bars not more than half an inch apart. Several times people have encountered incidents of birds escaping through the bars and also birds getting stuck in between bars. It is also important to decide on having horizontal or vertical bars. Large birds are to be kept in horizontal barred cages as that lets the birds climb up the bars a bit and exercise every now and then.

The shape of the cage is also extremely important. Imagine yourself living in a perfect sphere or circular house- enough to make your head spin? Birds have the same reaction too. Round cages affect them psychologically and therefore the most preferred shapes of cages are angled ones, rectangular or square. These can be styled inside with small mounds; stands etc where the birds can perch up and have some movement.

Today, craftsmanship also finds a place while choosing cages. Cages with fancy stands, perches etc are in demand. One the cage is brought be sure to clean it and check it any sharp items or anything harmful to the bird. Fill it colorful toys, soft accessories and also have a stylish small bird bath inside with a food tray where you can serve food to your lovely feathered friend.

NASA's commercial crew partner boeing completes parachute test

ScienceDaily (May 5, 2012) ? The Boeing Company successfully completed the second parachute drop test for its Crew Space Transportation (CST) spacecraft May 2, 2012, part of its effort to develop commercial crew transportation capabilities that could ferry U.S. astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit (LEO) and the International Space Station.

A helicopter lifted the CST-100 crew capsule to about 10,000 feet above the Delmar Dry Lake Bed near Alamo, Nev. A drogue parachute deployment sequence was initiated, followed by deployment of the main parachute. The capsule descended to a smooth ground landing, cushioned by six inflated air bags. The test demonstrated the performance of the entire landing system.

"Boeing's parachute demonstrations are a clear sign NASA is moving in the right direction of enabling the American aerospace transportation industry to flourish under this partnership," NASA's Commercial Crew Program Manager Ed Mango said. "The investments we're making now are enabling this new path forward of getting our crews to LEO and potentially the space station as soon as possible."

Boeing's CST system is designed to be a reusable, capsule-shaped spacecraft capable of taking up to seven people, or a combination of people and cargo, to and from low-Earth orbit, including the space station. HDT Airborne Systems of Solon, Ohio, designed, fabricated and integrated the parachute system, including the two drogue parachutes. ILC Dover of Frederica, Del., designed and fabricated the landing air bag system.

The first test, on April 3, validated the architecture and deployment of the parachute system, characterized pyrotechnic shock loads, confirmed parachute size and design, and identified potential forward compartment packaging and deployment issues. The company inspected and re-packed the full parachute system for this second test.

"This second parachute drop test validates Boeing's innovative system architecture and deployment plan," said John Mulholland, vice president and program manager of Boeing Commercial Programs. "Boeing's completion of this milestone reaffirms our commitment to provide safe, reliable and affordable crewed access to space."

The company has scheduled additional tests to be performed in 2012 that will provide more data on elements of the spacecraft's design.

Boeing's spacecraft was designed to be compatible with a variety of expendable launch vehicles. The company selected United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket for initial CST-100 test flights.

All of NASA's industry partners, including Boeing, continue to meet their established milestones in developing commercial crew transportation capabilities.

8 Professional Tumblr Themes For Your Small Business

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Unfortunately, when it comes to your small business website, image is everything. How you present your company on the digital sphere is important, and as we?ve learned recently, people are searching for the word ?Tumblr? moreso than ?blog.?

More and more brands have migrated to Tumblr. The micro-blogging site has become a more serious platform for brands ? whether it?s to show brand character, offer a peek behind the scenes, like we do here at Mashable or just to keep customers up-to-date on the latest from their storefront.

Some may feel slightly overwhelmed at the thought of juggling so many social media sites ? why add a Tumblr to the mix?

First, you should know that it can be done. Tumblr recently made sharing to Facebook easier by integrating with Timeline. That?s a helpful step in your social media management?s direction. Tumblr has carved a niche for itself in embracing a more graphic and design-oriented aesthetic, which is a plus for your company if you?re looking to distinguish yourself in a more meaningful way than you can through a generic Facebook Page.

You should also keep in mind that there are more than 50 million blogs on Tumblr. That is a lot of people who could be looking at your site.

The best place to start is simply setting up a Tumblr ? or maybe you already have one. After that, selecting a theme will help your site stand apart and look more professional. The great thing is you don?t necessarily need to spend a ton on a graphic designer or purchase a premium theme, although both of these options most certainly have their perks.

Don?t have the budget or the patience for a custom theme? Here are plenty of great free themes to choose from in Tumblr?s theme garden. Try to go with one that works with your brand and the utility goals of the blog. For example, if you?re looking to inform customers about what?s happening within the company, you?d be better off with a classic blog format. However, if you?re looking for something more visual, a pin-board style theme might be a better option.

Still feeling a little in over your head? We?ve round up eight classic, professional themes for your small business on Tumblr so you can become cutting edge with a simple or bold design.

Gaseous emissions from dinosaurs may have warmed prehistoric Earth

ScienceDaily (May 7, 2012) ? Sauropod dinosaurs could in principle have produced enough of the greenhouse gas methane to warm the climate many millions of years ago, at a time when Earth was warm and wet. That's according to calculations reported in the May 8th issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication.

The hulking sauropods, distinctive for their enormous size and unusually long necks, were widespread about 150 million years ago. As in cows, methane-producing microbes aided the sauropods' digestion by fermenting their plant food.

"A simple mathematical model suggests that the microbes living in sauropod dinosaurs may have produced enough methane to have an important effect on the Mesozoic climate," said Dave Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University. "Indeed, our calculations suggest that these dinosaurs could have produced more methane than all modern sources -- both natural and man-made -- put together."

Wilkinson and study coauthor Graeme Ruxton from the University of St Andrews were studying sauropod ecology when a question dawned on them: If modern cows produce enough methane gas to be of interest to climate scientists, what about sauropods? They teamed up with methane expert Euan Nisbet at the University of London to work out the numbers.

"Clearly, trying to estimate this for animals that are unlike anything living has to be a bit of an educated guess," Wilkinson said.

Animal physiologists have studied methane production from a range of modern animals to derive equations that predict methane production from animals of different sizes. It turns out that those calculations depend only on the total mass of the animals in question. A medium-sized sauropod weighed something like 20,000 kilograms, and sauropods lived in densities ranging from a few large adults to a few tens of individuals per square kilometer.

Wilkinson, Ruxton, and Nisbet therefore calculate global methane emissions from sauropods to have been 520 million tons (520 Tg) per year, comparable to total modern methane emissions. Before industry took off on modern Earth about 150 years ago, methane emissions were roughly 200 Tg per year. By comparison, modern ruminant animals, including cows, goats, giraffes, and others, produce methane emission of 50 to 100 Tg per year.

The study's conclusions not only show "just how strange and wonderful the workings of the planet are" but also serve as a useful reminder for the importance of microbes and methane for global climate, the researchers say.

Journal reference: Wilkinson et al.: "Could methane produced by sauropod dinosaurs have helped drive Mesozoic climate warmth?."

5 Tips for Throwing an Awesome Summer Cook Out | In Our Kitchen

Whether you are celebrating an engagement, birthday, graduation, or just taking advantage of the season?s warm weather, a cookout is the perfect choice for a summer party. From formal outdoor fetes to casual barbecues, hosting an awesome summer cookout is a matter of creative planning, detailed preparation and thoughtful consideration. Follow these five tips to host a cookout your guests will remember all summer long.

1. Prepare Your Party Space

Just as you wouldn?t have friends over to a house party without doing the dishes or vacuuming the rugs, take care to clean and organize your garden or patio before you host a cookout. Mow the lawn, wash down the pavement and stairs, weed flower beds and clean the grill and furniture. Be sure to store tools and toys for safety and neatness. If hosting the cookout at a public space, arrive early to make sure that the picnic tables are clean and the is area is free of broken glass and trash. Bring a broom and plenty of trash bags to clean up before and after the party.

2. Plan the Perfect Menu

Decide what type of food you will serve at your cookout. You can choose to provide all the meat and main courses while your guests bring side dishes or drinks. Choose a theme, such as Mexican food, and assign a side dish, dessert or appetizer to each guest. Another option is a ?grill your own? gathering where each guest brings their own meat to grill while you provide everything else. The fun and delicious options are many, but the important thing is to inform your guests ahead of time so that you don?t end up with fifteen versions of potato salad. It is also important to consider dietary restrictions and preferences. Provide a few gluten-free, nut-free and vegan options to ensure that everyone will enjoy the meal.

3. Pay Attention to Ambiance

Even the most informal summer cookout will be more enjoyable if a little thought goes into the party atmosphere. Arrange tables and chairs into conversation areas. Create food and drink stations at different locations around the yard so that your guests don?t all crowd around one area. Use small chalkboards or colorful note cards to label unfamiliar dishes or to designate non-alcoholic drinks and items containing nuts. String lights in the trees and along fences for a little sparkle in the evening, and use citronella candles for atmosphere as well as to repel bugs. Don?t forget the music!

4. Consider Your Guests? Comfort

Make the cookout enjoyable for all your guests by taking everyone?s comfort needs into consideration. Be sure to provide plenty of areas of shade and comfortable seating. Parents will appreciate a ?kids? table,? complete with water-squirting toys, sidewalk chalk, bubbles and crafts. Designate a table for first aid supplies, sunscreen and hand sanitizer. Toilets should be clean and easily accessible to everyone.

5. Don?t Forget ?Plan B?

Unfortunately, you can?t always count on summer weather for a summer cookout. If you?re prepared with a back-up plan a little foul weather might slow the party down, but shouldn?t stop it altogether. Be prepared to quickly cover and store food and supplies in the event of a surprise rain shower. Make sure you have access to a sheltered spot where the festivities can continue until the sun comes out again.

On eve of Putin's inauguration, protest and reaction bigger than expected

Police cracked down with tear gas and hundreds of arrests after anti-Putin protesters tried to cross a barricaded bridge.

Thousands of people marched through central Moscow Sunday, on the eve of Vladimir Putin's inauguration for an unprecedented third term as Russia's president, many chanting angry slogans such as "Putin out!" and "Putin is Russia's shame!"

Unlike the mostly peaceful and even good-natured mass rallies of recent months?Sunday's march ended in violence and hundreds of arrests as heavily-armored, tear gas-firing riot police moved in on a contingent of protesters who were attempting to cross a bridge that police had barricaded.?The independent Moscow radio station Ekho Moskvi reported that police arrested 400 people.?

Police put the number of protesters at 8,000, but organizers claimed that more than 20,000 people came out to march down a major Moscow avenue in the warm spring sunshine to Bolotnaya Square, within sight of the Kremlin, where they were to hear a rock concert and speeches from key opposition leaders.

The crowd was far larger than either organizers or police had anticipated; last week authorities granted a permit for just 5,000 participants. Many had predicted that the middle class pro-democracy movement would wane following Mr. Putin's decisive electoral victory in March, and fractious opposition leaders had already begun blaming one another for the decline in public support.

But anti-Putin Muscovites, organizing themselves through Facebook and the Russian-language VKontakte rather than through opposition parties and groups, appear to have handed everybody another surprise by showing up in numbers that journalists on the scene agreed were closer to the 20,000 estimate.

Among those reportedly arrested following the clashes with police were key opposition leaders Sergei Udaltsov, Boris Nemtsov, and anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny.

"No one expected it to end like this; the police reaction was way too harsh," says Alexei Larionov, an economist who says he hasn't attended a protest since 1991. "I got hit myself. It certainly looked like the police were under orders to be really tough. I think that had a lot to do with Putin's inauguration tomorrow. They wanted to give us a clear warning. But I don't think protests will stop because of this. This will continue."

Business Savvy ? Graduating? Career trends job-seeking students ...

Graduating? Career trends job-seeking students should know

(ARA) ? Students graduating from college this year should expect better job opportunities and salaries than graduates from recent history, but that doesn?t mean new graduates will have an easy time finding employment. Competition will still be fierce with hundreds of applications submitted for jobs in many industries, both from new graduates and former graduates still looking for work.

If you?re planning on graduating soon and seeking career opportunities, here are some employment trends to be aware of to stay on top of the career market:

* First, expect to change jobs numerous times in your career. In today?s career world, job stability does not always equal job security. Employees change jobs about every five years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Reasons differ for many people, but could be due to changes in the industry, restructuring in the company or because of lack of job growth within one company.

?The U.S. economy is fundamentally changing, and employees can no longer expect to work their way up the company ladder,? says Brad Kuchenreuther, campus president at Everest College-Vancouver.

* Second, know where the jobs are. ?Our nation is experiencing huge demographic and economic changes, which are creating major shifts in the types of jobs available today,? says Mary Durall-Dupree, academic dean Everest College-Vancouver. ?Students should prepare themselves for a changing job market.?

Current careers in need of employees include information technology, engineers and accounting and finance, according to Fortune 500 magazine.

?One of the fastest growing sectors in the coming decade will be the health care sector,? says Kuchenreuther. The health care industry is anticipated to see fast growth due to the baby boomer generation getting older and retiring from these positions, as well as needing more health care services themselves as they age. ?This is one of the reasons that we specifically target many of our degree programs to the field of health care training,? adds Kuchenreuther.

* Third, consider going back to school for additional career training. Today?s job market requires that employees keep their skills current, and as a result, more and more adults are going back to school. ?Students come to us to keep their skills up-to-date or get the credentials they need to advance in their careers,? says Durall-Dupree. ?They find that it is increasingly necessary in today?s changing job market.?

Careers that require education higher than a bachelor?s degree are expected to have the fastest employment growth by 2020, according to the BLS. But several occupations in the medical field and the marketing industry which require associate or bachelor?s degrees are also projected to grow rapidly through 2020. Going back to school for additional training, or earning a degree while already in the job are options for employees.

?Employers understand that a one- or two-year program can give new employees exactly the mix of academic learning and hands-on experience they need to excel in today?s changing job market,? says Kuchenreuther.

French voters chose Socialist Francois Hollande as their new president Sunday in a race that will have implications for Europe's debt crisis, the Afghanistan war and global diplomacy.

Hollande, largely unknown outside French borders, beat out conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy, who faced widespread anger and disappointment over his handling of the economy.

A few reasons why the outcome matters in France and beyond:

EUROPEAN DEBT CRISIS

Hollande could reshape the debate in the 17-nation eurozone. Until now, France and Germany ? led by Sarkozy and Angela Merkel ? have set the agenda on how best to restore troubled state finances and sluggish growth across the continent. The "Merkozy" solution: More cost-cutting to bring down debts and reassure markets. Hollande's solution: government-sponsored stimulus to revive growth.

DIPLOMACY

Hollande is a diplomatic unknown who will set a five-year course for his nuclear-armed country with a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council. Sarkozy is arguably the most America-friendly French leader in a half-century. He has aligned with Washington on Iran and Syria, upped France's military presence in Afghanistan and took a major role in NATO's air campaign over Libya that helped oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Hollande wants to bring French troops home from Afghanistan early and might be less vigorous in flexing military or diplomatic muscle abroad.

TAXES

Hollande wants the very rich to pay 75 percent in income taxes and plans to hike taxes on companies that distribute profits to shareholders instead of investing in their business. Sarkozy had pledged to reduce France's overall tax burden, among the highest in Europe, but promised a higher sales tax.

IMMIGRATION

Sarkozy wanted to halve the number of legal immigrants who enter France each year to 100,000 and to tighten border controls. Hollande would give residency to illegal immigrants on a case-by-case basis. The immigration debate has gotten tangled with a debate about Islamic customs in strongly secular France, home to at least 5 million Muslims.
